Fish Refuge Zones: Reserves that Multiply Life and Livelihoods
These are areas in the ocean where fishing is temporarily or permanently halted so that fish and other species can grow and recover within a favorable ecosystem. In doing so, they ensure sustainable benefits for biodiversity and fishing communities.
Integrated Management Zones
These zones combine mariculture, fish refuges, and quota-based fishing to restore species such as pen shells (callo de hacha) and the Pacific geoduck clam (almeja arrocera), while also improving marine habitats. Through this approach, we promote community participation with the goal of generating diversified income opportunities.
Removal of Abandoned Fishing Gear
host fishing occurs when nets and traps are abandoned and continue to harm marine life for years. At COBI, we work with coastal communities to prevent this problem by training them in safe techniques that help locate and remove this debris from the ocean.
Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs): Pathways Toward Recognized Sustainability
These are collaborative initiatives that help fishing communities adopt sustainable practices and, in doing so, protect ecosystems through effective resource management. Inspired by international standards such as MSC, SFW, and Fair Trade, they combine science, community participation, and strategic partnerships aimed at generating social, economic, and environmental benefits.
PescaData
A free app (available for both iOS and Android) created together with small-scale fishers in Latin America and the Caribbean. It allows users to record catches, analyze data, and connect communities to share good fishing practices.
Gender Equality at Sea
This initiative promotes the equitable participation of women and men in decisions related to fisheries and marine conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean. We recognize that integrating a gender perspective strengthens sustainability and social justice.
The Belize Fisheries Project
This project brings together fishing communities, organizations, and experts to improve artisanal fishing in Belize, home to the largest coral reef barrier in the Western Hemisphere. With a scientific approach and local participation, it seeks to restore key marine species, strengthen ecosystem resilience, and ensure that coastal communities can maintain their fisheries sustainably for future generations.
Artificial Reefs
This initiative seeks to restore the marine ecosystem through reefs that serve as refuges and repopulation sites for abalone, while also supporting other species such as lobster. The structures, built with local materials, create habitats, strengthen sustainable fisheries, generate employment, and provide the community with tools to responsibly care for marine resources.
