Gender Equality at Sea
What is the project about?
The Gender Equality at Sea (IGM) initiative, created by COBI in 2017, promotes the equitable participation of women and men in fisheries and marine conservation decision-making across Latin America and the Caribbean.
It recognizes that a gender perspective is essential for sustainable development, as well as environmental and social justice, and seeks to ensure that fishing communities, civil society organizations, academia, and government institutions integrate this approach at all levels—from local to global.
What does COBI do?
COBI leads the implementation of gender equality strategies in the fisheries sector by developing workshops, exchanges, and educational materials; communication campaigns such as @igualdadenelmar and the website igualdadenelmar.org; and methodological tools for collecting gender-disaggregated data. It also promotes interinstitutional dialogue, supports initiatives such as Sirenas de México, and has trained more than 535 people in Mexico and Latin America and the Caribbean on the relationship between gender, fisheries, and conservation.
Among its achievements are the publication of “Participación de las Mujeres en la Pesca y Acuacultura: Experiencias en América Latina y el Caribe”, the compilation of 71 climate solutions led by women in Mexico and Colombia, and the creation of the “Navegating Waters of Equality Manual: A Manual for Building a Gender Perspective in Fishing Communities.”
Who participates?
IGM collaborates with:
1. Fishing communities, civil society organizations, universities, and government institutions in nine countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, and Peru.
