The Belize Fisheries Project

What is the Belize Fisheries Project?

Belize is home to the largest coral reef barrier in the Western Hemisphere and a valuable small-scale fishing sector that faces increasing threats from overexploitation.

The Belize Fisheries Project is a collaborative initiative that brings together international and local experts to assess the status of fisheries and propose science-based management solutions. The goal: to ensure that key species such as queen conch and lobster recover and are sustained for future generations, while strengthening the resilience of coastal communities.

What Does COBI Do?

COBI contributes its regional expertise by:

1. Facilitating participatory processes with international organizations and the Belize Federation of Fishers, ensuring that fishing communities have a voice in management decisions.

2. Sharing scientific information and methodologies to assess the status of fisheries and propose recovery measures.

3. Strengthening regional alliances for the exchange of experiences and best practices in marine conservation.

Who participates?

1. Belize Federation of Fishers.

2. COBI.

3. Environmental Law Institute (ELI).

4. Healthy Reefs for Healthy People Initiative (HRI).

5. MRAG Americas.

6. Dr. Daniel Pauly (Sea Around Us).

More than 100 fishers from 17 communities, actively participating in workshops and decision-making processes.
