COVID-19 and its impact on artisanal fishing in Mexico.

The voice and resilience of coastal communities in times of pandemic.

In 2020, COBI launched a national consultation to understand how the pandemic affected fishers and coastal communities. Through 1,493 interviews and the analysis of more than 9,000 social media posts, we documented impacts, responses, and opportunities for a more resilient future for small-scale fisheries.

Our study, "The Voice of Mexican Artisanal Fishers in Times of COVID-19," offers a systemic view of the pandemic's social, economic, and environmental impacts and how communities responded with creativity and collaboration.

This work aims to inspire strategies that strengthen resilience and promote healthy oceans.

Stories and realities from the seashore.

From April to December 2020, we interviewed 397 fishers and 156 fishing organizations across all of Mexico's coastal states. Their experiences revealed critical challenges and local solutions that now serve as benchmarks for promoting sustainability and economic recovery in the sector.

Here is our book, "Voices from the Coast During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Solutions for Small-Scale Fisheries," featuring the latest information from our reports to share experiences and inspire actions that will drive the fishing economy toward sustainability.
