Coral Reef - Mesoamerican
It stretches from the coast of Isla Contoy in Mexico, continues through Belize and Guatemala, and reaches the Bay Islands in Honduras. That's over 1,000 km of continuous reef—the second largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia!
Rocky Reef – Gulf of California
The Gulf of California hosts rocky and coral reef ecosystems found in both shallow and deeper coastal waters. These reefs are formed by corals, algae, and organisms that attach to rock, creating structures that provide shelter, food, and breeding grounds for many marine species. They are key ecosystems for marine biodiversity and for the well-being of communities that depend on the sea.
Giant Kelp Forest – Pacific Ocean
Kelp forests, or giant kelp ecosystems, develop primarily along the Baja California Peninsula. They are formed by large algae, such as giant kelp, which grow from the seafloor and can reach the ocean’s surface. These forests provide shelter and food for many marine species and are essential to ocean health.
